A buddy's trc 457 has very tinny audio on ssb. Hes asking if there's a way to remedy the audio. Hes tried several mics including the stock mic.

From our silent key unit 399 on the Realistic 858 chassis:

Locate D23 (next to VR7). In the Realistic rigs a 220 ohm resistor is in the D23 location. Replace this resistor with a 1N914 or 1N4148 diode. (observe polarity). This change will make the Realistic 858 mod limiter the same as all of the other brands. Really opens up the audio. Replace C87 with a 10uF 16v electrolytic cap.

Don't know if this will help with a "tinny" sound. Could be electrolytics approaching end of life. Can't say for sure, since I don't know your buddy's particular radio.

Well I hooked up my own 457 today and talked to a few people. They mentioned it sounded tinny as well. Hmmm.

Improper alignment or age drift can cause ssb to sound too tinny or bassy. SSB is more critical and likely the first mode to show its age, AM not so much, as you can be over 100hz off frequency and most won't notice. A recap and alignment could be all you need.

Does anyone know if you can replace the 2290 in a galaxy dx 93t twin turbine with a 2sc2879 red dot? If so, what would have to be tuned?
