Howdy all, it's been a while since I've been on here. Looking for some recommendations/help with my antenna setup. As we know, the new Ford is aluminum, so no mag mounts. I don't need anything over the top as I'm just running a simple President McKiney with an old Astatic that has the right plug on it. I mainly use it for listening on road trips and occasionally for traffic control when I'm on a fire call with my volunteer fire department on the busier roads that have constant truck traffic. It makes giving directions to truckers easier. Anyways. I tried one of those 3rd brake light bracket things that have a steel plate so I could run a Wilson mag mount. That worked fine for the longest time till something went wrong with the antenna. Sitting still, SWR was perfect. Start driving, SWR went up into the 5s. I have an older Breedlove stake pocket mount that I put my K40 trucker into that I had lying around, and well, that's giving me issues. One moment, the SWR was perfect. And then the next thing I know, it's 5s or more. I'm not sure if it's the radio or the antenna setup. I've seen those hood mount setups for the F-150s, but I'm just not a fan of having a large antenna in that area. I did cut away the plastic bed rail cover so the stake pocket mount touches the bed. The only thing I have not done is use the grounding screw and run a ground somewhere. I just got frustrated and gave up. I know everyone says don't use the SWR meters on the radios, but when I first got the radio and installed everything on my F250, the radio said the same thing as the external SWR meter. So I don't know if this is a radio thing or an antenna thing.

So, back to the question, what are reasonable options for a simple antenna setup? I'm not looking to drill a bunch of holes or run a 102 whip, if I have to go with one of those hood mounts, so be it, just trying to avoid that.
