Democrats, Cruz said, are ready to vote on S.J. Res. 19, a bill that would amend the Constitution to limit the amount of money spent in elections. The proposed amendment was introduced last June and has been referred to the Committee on the Judiciary. The bill claims to "advance the fundamental principle of political equality for all, and to protect the integrity of the legislative and electoral processes," but Cruz says there's another agenda at work.

Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) has announced the Senate Democrats are scheduling a vote on a constitutional amendment to give Congress the authority to regulate political speech, because elected officials have decided they don’t like it when the citizenry has the temerity to criticize what they’ve done,” he said. “They don’t like it when pastors in their community stand up and speak the truth."
As we have reported, Schumer -- the New York Democrat called a "fascist" by the conservative Americans for Limited Government -- has openly said Obama should use the IRS to suppress the Tea Party. Liberal Democrats like Schumer have long sought to overturn the Supreme Court Citizens United case that protects political speech for corporations.
Cruz noted that 41 Democrats have signed up to repeal the First Amendment.
“It explicitly says nothing in this new amendment shall abridge the freedom of the press," Cruz said. “So the New York Times is protected, but it doesn’t say the same thing about the freedom of speech.”
Nor, he added, does it say anything about religious liberty. The goal, he added, is to limit free speech.
“What it says is that politicians in Washington have unlimited constitutional authority to muzzle each and every one of you if you’re saying things the government finds inconvenient,” he added.
Cruz, CNS added, was not originally scheduled to speak at the event, but showed up to introduce his father, an ordained minister who fled Cuba to escape Communist oppression.
