I have a friend who's father was a ham he past away years ago and he has some stuff he just came accross and one item is a alpha 87a amp. Would it be worth buying this amp from him for use on 11 meters with my rci 2990 and if I did would I need to get anything done to have it run up to par. I seen that its rated at 1.5kw would i be seeing that on 11 meters am/ssb?

Well depends

Your radio is already overkill for 11 meters
However that is indeed a sweet amp ( for sure major over kill for 11 meters)
many crazy superbowl amps have more juice
however few if any of those are as clean or good as the alpha 87a amp

I would say get it
and then go one better and get your ham license

then you could really enjoy that sweet amp

you may not be seeing anything on 11M AM or SSB.... if the previous owner hasn't already unlocked the processor with the necessary digital PIN# then good luck getting it to operate above 24Mhz..those PIN#'s are only issued to 87A owners who have produced and presented a valid amateur license of general class or higher at the time of purchase or service.
