CW,

Isn't a "channel" designated as 10kc's ?

I shared this with Jonbah. I thought I would post it here as it seems to be a known problem in case someone else has the same problem-.-

AM FILTER MOD

I read an article about improving the AM performance in the IIG by replacing the AM filter (FL-94) with the AM filter (FL-116) from the original 706. I ordered the filter from ICOM (Total cost about $25 including shipping) and have it installed. The AM filter in the original 706 was used for AM only and narrow and wide FM were bypassed. In the IIG, the AM filter is also used for FM narrow and only FM wide is bypassed. Supposedly, AM selectivity is greatly improved with this mod. Without test equipment and a before and after measurement I can only say that AM reception is very good with this filter. Audio quality is good and adjacent AM interference seems minimal. This mod required the removal of the main board. Don't attempt if you have any doubts as to your abilities to unsolder the old filter, solder the new filter and replace the board.

Not sure what that has to do with the question asked....

Anyway, you can use the narrow 1.8khz filter on AM. I think it's FL-223. It makes the audio too narrow for AM, but it will hlep. The other thing to check first is to make sure you don't have the pre-amp on. Also remember, if you hold the pre-amp down for a second, it activates a 20db attenuator which probably will also solve your issue.

I had the narrow filter on mine and it works great for adjacent noise. I forgot but doesnt the 706 mkiig have a AM narrow setting also? I sold mine so I forgot

We'll I guess since Icom doesn't think its a problem, I guess its not a problem. Its real tough to listen to a AM Ham station (CW Morse) while + - 30kc of SSB are crossing right thru the AM signal. AM narrow filter in the 706MIIG.? Yah its narrow !, Icom stated the narrow filter was ment for FM Narrow thats 3kc while AM is meant to be Hi Hi 6 kc wide. Have you ever tried to listen to a AM station with a 1.8KC filter I don't think so.

Anyway I'll be setting up a AM only station with an older type radio that will accept a true AM filter.

Thanks for all the input.

Does anyone know if any of the optional filters for the Icom 706MIIG will help the AM recieve. Cause right know with whats stock in the radio sounds like crap and I pick up at least 5 channels each way on AM .???

When band conditions are good 6Kc bandwidth is good for AM.I have a Kenwood R-1000 (great rx BTW) and it has selectable AM bandwidth of either 2.7 and 6 or 6 and 12 KHz.You have to change a jumper inside.I use the narrower filters. It does not sound that great on 2.7 but it makes digging out the weaker signals better.I have even listened to European AM broadcasters nestled in between the North American stations. For TX'ing AM on the ham bands I am going to dig out my old Heath DX-60B along with the matching HG-10 VFO and HR-10 receiver (piece of crap but it looks good as a matching set).It sounds sweet with that all tube sound and grid modulated AM. Starting to build a four tube 572B amp to go with it so I hope to have a good solid respectable sound.Of course the mic will be the ever popular D-104SE.
