I know of an individual who has a Galaxy DX88 like the one pictured above. His radio sounds good on straight AM, but on SSB in either USB or LSB, on his RX, it sounds really distorted, like if the speaker was busted. (it's not). TX sounds about the same.

We are wondering if there's anything in particular with this line of Galaxy radios that would cause the TX/RX to sound distorted on SSB?

See if R249(?) has been clipped and the AM Limiter has been removed.
Typical.
Either that; or the ALC VR is set too high. More likely that it is the AM Limiter removed.

Good luck with that radio on SSB the Galaxy 88 and 99 models had oscillator problems and it is what it is and is the nature of those particular beasts which is unfortunate.

Just because a radio has a ssb knob does not mean that it can function properly on ssb

and another dead ringer giveaway is :
if the radio has a roger beep or echo its not a true ssb radio
