Guess you could take the old MV1Y diode off of its mounting surface with dremel/grinder, epoxy a 1N4148 diode on it, put some shrink tubing on the bare leads, and then attach it back in place as the original one was. Epoxy will transfer heat well enough, as this is the same media that the original MV1Y was attached with. You could even just go ahead and put the diode in w/o attaching it just to see if that was the problem in the first place.
So, doing a neat job and sparing yourself the mailing/wait period to see the job done is one way of looking at it. Not to mention cost - which is stupendously high - for what amounts to a five-cent diode. Some of these eBay jokers sell these things for five bucks a pop and people line up to pay that all day long - silly as it seems . . .
