I have a 2970 hooked to a Pyramid 36, with a Bulldog meter in line and the radio will draw 21 amps with a AUDIOOO on SSB. The watts are around 145.



Now when I take the meter out of line the radio will only draw 11 amps, so this means less output. Now I can hook my other 2970 up and do the same check with no difference in amp drawn with and without the meter.



So why is this one radio not drawning the same amps with the meter out of line?



One more thing, just talking with a normal voice the radio only draws 7 amps, just like my 2950. But when hooked to the watt meter, it will pull around 15 amps.

This is a long shot, but here's a guess:



145 watts / 13.8 volts = 10.5 amps of draw, which is what you see without the meter and is correct



My guess is that the radio's impedence is off at the output, causing the radio to see a high VSWR between the radio and the meter. I bet if you vary the length of the jumper between the radio and the meter, your results will change. Try it and let us know what happens.
