IC251a and a Tuner Plus3 Desk Mike?

Anyone tried using a true amplified desk mic on the 251a?

Have the Icom SM6 mic now but would like to have a touch more audio that the radio delivers on its own for SSB operations. Being told I am quiet as a whisper at times.

I am sure the mic will work, just wondering if it will overdrive the radio or will audio be capped? Nothing in the available documentation addresses this and no one online seems to have asked the question before. Not attempting to be overdeviated just want to boost the low audio the radio seems to suffer from.

I had one wired to a 251A one time. You will have to use 2 settings on the mic. 1 for FM and 1much lower for SSB. On-air test with a friend will help set it right. The white wire and shield stay on the same pins and I can't remember which pin the red wire goes to (red wire keys the radio so just touch it to the pins with the mic keyed until the radio keys)but the black wire on the Turner was not used. Not the "best" audio but better than the hand mic you have. FYI, The little hand mic I borrowed from a IC-910 sounded better than the Turner on both FM & SSB. Use the Turner but keep an eye out at swap meets, E-Bay etc for a Icom mic. I would bet the SM-20 would sound SWEET on it.
Quote:
Not attempting to be overdeviated just want to boost the low audio the radio seems to suffer from.

That is the problem with Icom's, The audio preamp is in the mic instead of the radio like all other brands. A "power mic" will work but not as good as a mic made for Icoms.
