how well do these radio's handle heat?...and why do some people mod the fan to stay on all the time?

Santa, the 706 MKIIG does not have a "HEAT" problem. What happens is the radio get warm just sitting idle and some people feel uncomfortable with this. I found that if I turned my display brightness down it rand cooler. From the article on mods dk they say the older 706 models before the IIG always had the fan running and the mod for the just does that, keeps the fan running. On qst they showed a mod to add an external fan powered from the data port.

Including myself there are 7 people I know with the MKIIG with NO fan mods and they are all running just fine.

Some people just want to re-engineer <img src=http://www.wwdx.org/smilies/posticon62.gif ALT=":62">

The "heat" problem is mostly talk from guys who don't understand how the radio works. The radio draws air from the front and passes it to the back. It also essentially uses the case as it's heat sink. There are also settings in the radio to keep it on longer if you want. The mod just makes it run all the time, which keeps the whole thing cooler. It certainly doesn't hurt anything, but there's not much to worry about anyway.
