I have one, and I have been told it sounds tinny. I plugged it into the mic tester, and it did indeed lack bottom end for me. I do have a bit deeper voice. I imagine to a degree it could depend on the radio but I am unsure how much if at all.

thanks i rather choose of hands-on experience than reviews from magazine one guy stated it did as good as astatic d104,106b and a 636l

They are a pretty hot microphone but not a power mic. Not really in the same category as the others mentioned. For many years that mic came stock with several of the ranger named radios and most folks immediately put them aside in favor of an aftermarket flavor.

So to responding to your thread title, the 158-4h is a factory stock mic but sold alone as a replacement.

Here is my thoughts on the mic. The shape and weight feel great in the hand, (the heft comes from weights they put in the mic). The build quality is solid and bang around worthy. The mic has enough drive to push most transceivers to 100% modulation no problem. The mic element has a low end cut off at around 300hz so yes, it does lack bottom end but doesn't sound tinny. Pretty much sounds the same as those stock cobra coffin mics or any other cheap cb mic. For a solid replacement stock mic with good drive( due to element impedance), and that will last it is a great choice.
