I hate golden screwdrivers, and we have a local here who uses nothing but the finest jewelers screwdrivers to guarantee cracked cores. This particular radio had 3 broken cores and I was able to remove 2 of them and replace the cores, but one is buggered up beyond recognition. I know barkett has it, less than $3, but the almost $18 shipping is for the birds. I won't entertain that idea unless I have a big order, which I don't. Does anyone have a good, used transformer for about $10 shipped?

Thanks in advance.

I was wrong, the radios I have use the EPT069610Z. The only 36001 board I had was given away last year. Sorry.

Somebody (else) needs to put together a proper cross-reference between the "LA"-prefixed numbers found in a Uniden-made product and the numeral-only IDs used in a radio made by RCI. There are more than a few overlaps where the same part has a different number in each factory. Now that the radio junkyard is becoming the primary source for a lot of parts, this kind of substitution list would be handy, and more so year by year.

Couldn't someone (else) compare the BOM from both or extrapolate the cross reference from item placement across the boards? I could see an issue comparing a copy of a copy of a board to the original, things change, the transformer got smaller, supply issues caused a needed circuit tweak to accommodate a slightly different part here and there. Sounds like a ton of fun for someone (not us).

I have trouble sacrificing one for the many. What is more important, having a working radio or chopping it up so other radios can get fixed? I find it a difficult decision.

Any chance of dissecting the bad one and using a similar can to copy it?

I know how you feel about not ruining a good radio. The only radio that I have that has one of those is my Midland 8001XT. There's been a few times I wanted to convert it to a parts radio but I just can't do it. That's the radio I got my WR numbers on. Talked to scott and eli on that one back when 8113 got me into the hobby in 2016. That radio still works.

I assume the "2008" IFT in that surface mount midland is the same as the 12008, but I guess I am not 100% sure.

and what happened to the price of parts radios????? A few years ago, a non-working radio might run $20 on ebay, now they all seem to be going for what working radios did at the same time.

The actual can and cap are fine, but the top and bottom of the slug are blown out and the core won't budge either way. Looks like someone already flipped the core.

I still have my first base, a 142gtl, I almost sold the meters out of it once for some extra cash, but any other temptation to pull parts was short lived.

When I started fixing radios, I usually took payment in the form of old or broken radios, most radio guys have stacks of old radios stashed away, in an attempt to have parts rigs, but I always ended up fixing those too. Maybe that's why the listings are fetching more, because they are very repairable.

Crazy idea. Can you take a tiny sliver of a small o-ring (or even solder) on each side of the bad slug (for grip) and use two good slugs to pinch down on the bad one, then with a pliar wrapped in electrical tape applying pressure to the ends of the two pincher slugs, rotate the entire can to screw the entire slug stack? Dont forget to heat it first to loosen the wax that probably led to the slug being tight in the first place.

Or diamond-dremel a pit in it, then epoxy the same dremel bit into the hole?

That is wild, but it's flush with the bottom so idk.

This, I thought of doing that, but didn't think of using a Dremel to make a hole in the core. I am going to try that. I thought of drilling through the core and cracking it up, but I have no drill bit that cuts the ferrite. I have some tiny diamond tipped Dremel bits though.

Side note; I picked this thing up at Goodwill for like 5 bucks, I think it's for manicures but it chucks my small Dremel bits perfectly. It rechargeable, has variable rpm via the big knob and forward/reverse. I usually just use it to cut traces or nibble metal. If you ever come across one, I recommend it.

I used to drill a small hole in the bottom of the circuit board to get to the bottom slot of the core but you already said it was broken too.

I got a small hole in the core now, and cracked the cap for good measure lol. The epoxy is curing now. I figure a variable cap scabbed on the bottom will give me an idea of the value. I will have to use a core from the bin and it may be different length or composition so this may be a blessing to be able to tune the cap to the core/transformer. We will see!
