Kinda Technical Question...

I'm interested in trying to find the right coil dimensions for attaching a 9' whip -- used as two radials -- to tune a resonant vertical 1/4 wave antenna, using an MFJ 259B. Can someone give me a step-by-step on how to find out the inductance I need; and what I should be looking for in the readouts as I build the coil? I'm not an electronics guru by any stretch of the term, so pleeze keep things simple if you would...
