My buddy mounted his on the front driver-side fender (Radio Shack bracket). He also tried the passenger-side front fender, but for some reason the drive-side worked better. Maybe it's a West coast thing.

On his previous truck, he custom made a bracket that mounted on top of the bed rail near the front. Again, driver side. It was basically a piece of flat stock which got the antenna outside of the bed-rail so he could put on the canopy.

I mention his because I drive a yuppie Expedition and you asked about truck installations.

I used the Firestik stake hole mount on my Ram.

I worked oversees all the time with that mount and a Wilson 5' Silverload, 2950 and just a bit of heat.
