I have one of the Superstar/Landmatic mic testers and have had no problems with it.It is a very handy little device that has jacks on the side for testing noise toys as well.

Or you could build your own that can be used with a bench radio.I thought about doing just that but after pricing all of the parts I needed to make one added to the time involved I had the wife buy me one as a birthday present instead.

If you feel like building one yourself let me know as I have the plans for one(from the yellow book of cb repair).

The local ratshack has one for customers to test their mic's with.

It is made by Midland, looked pretty decent.

FLatland,

I just got the landmatic Mic tester in and in the instructions it says you can also use a 9volt battery but does not have a place to put it. Do you know where it goes ?

It goes inside! Take the screws out of the case and the holder should be there. There is also a jack in the back for a plug to use a output from a wall wart transformer as well.

I didnt like the style of 9 volt plug that came with it and replaced it with a rat shack plug and put in a rat shack 9 volt battery holder to keep it in place.
