I recently did a trade with bcrewcaptain for a Cobra 29 LTD WX Classic. Last Saturday I took the radio over to Frank at F.G. Best to have him do their 45-50 watt mod and some other stuff.
The radio I got was pretty much stock. Really the only thing done to it was that the little choke by the antenna output that's used by the weather receiver had been cut out. No big deal...Frank just made a new one and fixed it.
Here's the run down on what I had him do:
-45-50 watt mod
-He did a "switchable carrier" mod using the channel 9/normal switch. When the radio is on the Chan. 9 setting, it keys at 2 watts, when it's on Normal, it keys 6 watts.
-Turbo echo board with talkback: Put the echo volume and delay control on the SWR CAL knobs
-Switchable talkback using CB/PA switch: On PA there's no talkback, on CB talkback is enabled.
-Full alignment
On Frank's Bird 43P, the radio in his shop showed 47 watts peak. I took the radio home, plugged it into a power supply running exactly 14.00 volts and an oil can dummy load. On my Bird 43P, it showed 45 watts peak and 20 avg. Unless Bird built more than one set of defective 43P meters and 50H slugs, I'd say that the radio performs as advertised. Sounds loud as hell, too <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/images/emoticons/pimp.gif ALT=":hat">
