Need a Malaysian Cobra 148 cheap

How does the stock mic perform?

It seems to be close to the coffin mics I use. This radio is going in the closet to keep the Grant Bros company.
It's a crap shoot on stock mics anyway, some have a good tone to them and the next one might be terrible.
From what I learned sometimes coffin shaped mics were in these boxes and others, like mine, were packed with the heavier, bulkier mics.

What time frame did Ranger make this model?

if memory serves me right it was early 2000's to 2005. at least close. from what I remember of them. hard to find now. I know I started to buy one about 2003 and a guy sold me a Grant LT for 50.00 so I did not buy one.

I have another Texas Ranger TR-296 which has the on/off/squelch knob where the mic gain control is on my latest 296. I bought that new in 2001.
If I had to guess, the one we both just bought would have to be about 2003. The side mic 148s were discontinued in 1998 so the oldest the 296s could be is about 13-14 years old.
Let me know which mic you get.....I put the heavy bulky mic on my Cobra 2000 last night and everyone said the audio was sharp and excellent! I thought the mic was great myself too and my signal strength jumped up 1 s unit!

I remember seeing these back then, but never jumped on one.

Your pic shows "GK" after the model number and has a coffin style mic pictured on the box. The one I purchased shows the newer style mic and the "GK" nomenclature is missing.

Can you comment on the significance of these differences? Also, what, if any, board or component changes be in the different variations of the "296" line?

Thanks for the schooling so far.

The box picture is of the 296 I bought in 01. There is no difference on the insides, just has a couple of controls switched around and a crummy gold bezel. Loud loud radio. Beautiful sounding coffin mic too.
Here is the box of the one I just got.

What's the story on the boards? Did Ranger duplicate them or are they an old stock resourced board?

Not like a Superstar JA stinky, moldy smelling warehouse find.??

I noticed he used the same photo of your listing for the one I bought.

You can have mine when you pry it from my cold dead fingers! The seller doesn't waste time, you'll probably get it today. Box was a little wrinkled, but everything inside was perfect.
The radio also had the typical Warranty Void sticker on the side....LOL.
I can't tell the difference between my NOS Malaysian 148 and the 296 board.
There is a plug for a frequency counter too.

Hello gentlemen and Ladies. I have the dreaded RCI-2990 receive issue where my radio gets distorted when people get close to my location. I found the C90 Capacitor, but I can not for the life of me find the C89 capacitor. Can or does anyone have a picture of the exact location of C89 ? Thank you in advance, Wes
