was the receive preamp on at the time?
were you keyed up when it died or were you receiving?
where did you hear the "rumbling" noise from? from the amp itself or from your radio's speaker?
what is your SWR with the amp inline and off?

will the amp key up? (do you hear the relay in the amp click when you key the mic?)

the more details you can provide, the more help you will get.

right now i am wondering about the receive preamp transistor(s).
