Radioshack TRC-447 Radio questions

re: TRC-447 questions

:D OK, 1st question; I have setup my radio to work with a radioshack antenna: http://www.radioshack.com/product.asp?catalog_name=CTLG&product_id=21-989 on my car. My SWR's are all over the place 1st at Ch1-2.2 ch19-1.8 ch40-1.6 then latelly at ch1-2.0 ch19-2.5 ch40-3.0; I've played with the antennas height but those are the best num# I can get now. Do u know if there's a better antenna for this radio to work with? 2nd I use my cb both in my car and my truck at work and use to get a green light on my TX/RX indicater but latelly I can only get the light on after I transmit. 1st red then green for a split second. Did I burn something out? I was checking my swr's on my onboard meter and forgot to switch from swr to rx/tx one time when I transmitted, could that have done something to my radio?

not the best antenna in the world there )-: ...but it will work ....your first set of numbers are really just fine and dandy as long as your not running any power .....your second set of SWR numbers are much poorer )-: (it really has to do with poor grounding on the antenna) .....it's the quality of the mag mount (poor) as far as your radio goes , as long as your transmitting and receiving OK ? I wouldn't worry about the lights for now ....90% of all radio communacations are all about antenna's .......so having a good one can really make all the differents in the world .....Do yourself a favor in the future if you can afford it and get yourself a Wilson brand mag mount antenna ...preferabley a 500 to 5000 model ......the 1000 would be a very good choice and if you might want to run some power in the future, you could with that antenna.
Wilson Antennas

Just about every other CB antenna will work better than that one. Adjusting that antenna is very touchy. If you move the stinger just a 1/8", it can change the SWR quite a bit. You just have to make tiny adjustments and be patient. Or, you can get a better antenna.....If you're after a mag mount, start with the Lil Wil', and if you're willing to deal with a little more height, then move up to the Wilson 1000. You'll find a huge difference in RX and TX.

I'm not quite following you on the TX/RX indicator issue. What was it supposed to do, be green on RX and red on TX? It won't hurt anything to TX while the switch was set on SWR.

re:Better antenna & light indicator

u see I own a '96 grand am so I don't know if I can fit it on(a 102" whip). as for the light indicator; my cb when it 1st was connected it had the TX/RX light on(green); but latelly it almost always off. I thought it burned out but notice it turn green for a moment right after I transmitt. I appreiciated the help :D

I have 2 of those antennas that I started out with. I always was able to get SWR down to 1.3 or less across all 40 channels on a 98 Escort trunk and roof of a BroncoII. On average I could Talk about 5 miles "as the crow flys" in these mountians. When you are able to the Wilson line are great antennas. I run a 1000 on daily driver and lil wil on wifes car, very pleased with both. Almost doubled range with both. As far as the lights go I wouldn't worry as long as rx/tx is working fine.
