Software for Decoding

The best "software" for copying CW is found between your ears. Learn Morse code and you can copy CW with the best of us.

As for the other two modes, I'm sure there are many choices and I'm sure somebody will be along soon to recommend some.

Seriously though: there's nothing that can replace the human ear and brain for copying code - especially if it's poorly sent, a very weak signal with lots of QRM/QRN/QSB - or all of the above.

Hi,

I tried to learn morse, but didn't seem to get on with it.

Is there a pattern to the letters part? The numbers are easy .---- ..--- etc.. and work upwards to ----- for zero. :)

Ham Radio Deluxe with Digimaster 780 will decode just about any mode, although I don't believe WEFAX is supported. I believe MixW and MMSSTV support WEFAX, though.

I haven't found that any of them decode cw real accurately, though. Software is better than nothing, though.

A pattern? Well, the most common letters tend to have the shortest Morse representations, but that's no help at all. It's like learning a new language, and that's the best way to approach it. Hear a sound pattern and recognize the letter/number/punctuation mark that it represents. Be prepared to devote a significant amount of time DAILY. It's quicker if you have somebody working with you.

You don't even want to think of it as --- or .-., its sounds and you need to get your brain into recognizing the sounds as letters and numbers. Some of the software(even the free stuff) is pretty good. I found the Koch method worked pretty well for me. It does take some time to learn the code but even techs have HF privileges for CW
