Has anyone put a Speech Processor in a Mag 257 or other Magnum Radio?

Is it a worthwile project?

I'm considering either the SP1-a Ranger one, or the one from www.cbcintl.com/dsp.htm.

Any experiences with either? I've heard varied opinions on the Ranger one and heard good stuff about the CBCIntl one.

Also, is a DSP and an AMP a bad mix? I'm not talking worldwide wattage, maybe 100-150. I know they're basically for barefoot use, but I was wondering about that anyhow.

Thanks guys.

I have two magnun 257s, both with an SP-1a from Bobs CB.bobscb.com/kits/tr_kits.htm From what I understand Bob makes them up himself. I clicked on the link you posted and find the add somewhat misleading. Statements such as " Boost your radio talk power and range" or "Blow their ears off with dynamic speech processing" are really streching it. Basically what the SP-1a will do for you is make your voice sound a little better. Don`t expect miracles. Is it a worthwhile project? Well.....It is for me. But thats just my personal preference.

Personally, I don't think it's worth the money. You're not going to make it sound like a high quality HF rig by doing this. IMO, you're better off spending the cash on improving your mic or the quality of your amp, if you run one. I run a 257 with an Astatic Road Devil Mic, and XF200HD AB biased amp. Almost every day, I get a comment like, "Are you really mobile?" and "I can't believe how clean you sound". If you can get comments like that without a speech processor, why mess with it any more?

Typically you can't go wrong running a D104 or 575 on these radios. I use power mikes (specific ones) for fidelity.

I have yet to hear a processed radio that made the fidelity of a stock mike better.

What about the fidelity of the good mics with the processor? I use a MFJ525b external processor on my Comanche Warroir base radio with a Shure 444 desk mic. I get told a lot I have sudio quality audio. I turn off the processor an am told to turn it on and leave it on it sounds better without it. When I am in the dump truck I talk to my XYL a lot and con vouch for the difference in quality. I am not saying it is the wonder dog of radio equipment, just that if used in the right combination it improves your audio quality a great deal.

Are the SP-1a`s working pretty good for me? Hard to say. You see, I never got a chance to listen to my radios. The compliments I have gotten pertaining to my audio are taken with a grain of salt. I know this doesn`t help. Sorry but I don`t want to mislead you. Although I can say this. I haven`t gotten any complaints.
