Just got one of these and so far not too bad. Has a very hot receive,hears every little bit of static everywhere. Biggest problem I have is it just doesn't receive the far off stations with any volume. I have to turn the volume way up and then get blasted when somebody closer talks. Time for an alignment? Not real impressed so far.

Mine acts in the same manner. Actually seems to filter more than my 148gtl. 148 has better ears. Sound quality in receive is better than the 148. The 497 also has better Tx sound quality by using limited talkback and delay you really sound good. Keep playing with it, you will grow to accept it's qualities.
