I wonder if it's the same barefoot Chinese children making hg and dei transistors. I was cleaning out my shop the other day and I found my first foray into Chinese pills. I think they were hg...I don't think they were dei. I posted about it a decade ago on here. I built a two transistor amplifier and they wouldn't even conduct. I added bias, removed bias...nothing. not shorted, just...nothing.
That was enough for me, I got frustrated and never built another transistor amp. I guess they have improved obviously but for me, the magic is gone. When good parts disappeared and we have grown accustomed to repairing amps, "because they ARE just gonna break" I lost interest. We had it too good for too long.
