Look at how much space their is in this commercial broad cast transmitter set up to work! If I could afford to ship that girl my way or drive out their and get her.....She would me all mine!!! LOL

Try not to drool on your key baords when you check this old girl out. I would have to paint her and give her a more lively color though!

I had a friend that had a 10,000 watt AM Broadcast transmitter. It had just been retubed maybe 3 months before the station got bought out and they went from AM to FM and changed from Country to Rock and Roll. They asked him the RF/Broadcast Engineer for several stations in the area if he wanted it. They sold it too him cheap too a few thousand $$$.......She was so beautiful!!!
 

That monster works on 230v single phase? I've got that! It would look great in the corner of my shack.

Seems a bit of overkill for just 1 KW though.

230 volt single phase at 30 amps is all you need for that. I had an RCA 1 Kw broadcast rig that I planned to modify for 80m but the modulator blew up and creamed the entire audio path so I ended up scrapping it. Search this site for RCA BTA-1S conversion thread.

When you are dealing with AM broadcast frequencies you don't need really short lead lengths but you do need high reliability hence the headroom for long term reliability. When you are called out in the middle of the night to put it back on the air you will appreciate the room to move around inside the cabinet.

Yeah too bad in a way. They are much easier to work on and much more appealing to the eye than the new solidstate transmitters.
 
I am 6 foot 2 inchs and played college football for a short time before the knee's just gave up.....Bad cartilage and lots of tendon and ligament trauma. So being a big guy I like space!!!LOL That is one of the things I hate about front wheel drive car's! No space to work!I gave up electronics 2 years out of H.S. because surface mount was starting to come on big time!!! It was always a challenge to make jumpers so you could separate stacked boards and it was just a nightmare !!! So yes something like that old girl would appeal to me in a big way. It looked like she had dual 833 tubes so she could do 1000 watt's all day and all night long. That air duct was huge as well so I can only imagine the volume of air passing through that enclosure. No way a duct that big was high pressure! The Russian 833's are too pricey for my taste but to be honest I would love to have a set of them. I hear you can run two of them at low output for 1000 watt's and not even need to use a fan as long as you are talking SSB if you do that on AM and get long winded you should have some air flow but supposedly you do not need much! It would be nice to have a near silent desk top!
 
The Gates BC-1 series I worked on had a pair of 833's running class C plate modulated by another pair of 833's running class B audio service. The audio and RF drivers were 807's. The BC-1 series simply had a fan mounted on the inside top of the cabinet to exhaust the hot air from the cabinet,no direct air flow at the tubes. The 833 is only rated at 350 watts plate dissipation and is a very low mu tube that requires lots of drive. It does not really make a very good linear amplifier tube and does not like to be run above 20 MHz very well. They do however work very well in class C plate modulated service hence the reason so many 1 Kw class transmitters used them.
 
CaptinKilowatt, I am so very glad I joined this site you are a wealth of information that is not usually nicely stated in books!Other's on this site have all been helpful too but I really appreciate your patients and your advice and the little tid-bits of info you drop here and their!

I had no idea that 833's really do not make a good choice for a 1KW linear amplifier in spite of being used so much! Generally I know this is wrong but if I see something that is popular I normally associate it as "best practice". This is why though I have also been so confused at times. In the Amateur Homebrew world those that actually know electronics well make all kinds of sub's that are ok for what they want! Those of us that do not truly have a strong grasp on electronics and circuit design see this stuff and usually cannot tell best practice from monkey see monkey do! So it is nice to have someone that has the book smarts and the practical experience to sort this stuff out for the rest of us!
