UHF Superhet

Hi guys,
Really hoping somebody can help me out here. I have an upcoming RF college project, I have to design and build a simple superhet receiver that can pick up an aircrafts pulse modulated transponder signal operation at 1.09 Ghz. The frequency is just high enough so that I can't use standard LC filters etc, so I have decided to use microstrip bandpass filters made from PCBs.

I'm finding it extremely hard to find components that will do the job. I.e Mixers, Oscillators etc. What I am really looking for is a development board that has the majority of the IC components that I need. Could somebody point me in the right direction?? I have a budget of approx $250.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

here's some helpful information written by Kuhn. he
also covers classical superheterodyne architecture,
microstrip filter/inductor geometry and provides some
valuable insights into dealing with construction
techniques in the range in question.

or you can forget about really learning anything at all
about design and just modify a 2.4Ghz. wireless video
camera receiver and be done with it, keeping in mind that
real design would constitute building it from the ground up.

and here's the last option.

if you want more information then search Google and play
with your search terms. remember, there's always ebay.
