Hi Guys,
First time poster here...

I was recently given .. for free.. a GME TX4400 with a blown
internal fuse. After repairing that, the unit appears to work.

I have installed a Benelec elevated feed antenna, and mounted
the unit in my car.

The problem is that although the Tx works (I know this because I
can transmit to my UHF handheld), it doesn't appear to be a strong
signal.
I am unable to reply to anyone that I can hear over the GME, So
I can't get a radio check on air.

It appears that the unit works, but the output is very weak.
Does this unit have any known problems that I can look at?
It's a shame if I have to discard the unit, since it gets police
freqs as well, and police are still using analogue where I live.
Cheers,

I searched around on the internet, but couldn't find a schematic. It's probably just a small adjustment that needs to be done. GME still makes those radios; their website indicates that you can send them in. It would be worth it to see if they'd fix it under warranty...might not cost you a thing!

Don't tell them you got it second hand. Just tell them you can't find the sales receipt.

Maybe the ones you're trying to get a radio check from are running coded squelch? Try your handheld for some distance checks and see how it works that way.Of course you're gonna have to have someone help out on the other end.

I have tried with my Dad holding the handheld in the driveway while I take off in the car.
I have gone 2-3Kms away till I can hardly make him out, but he
says I'm still coming through fine.

Maybe I will leave it with him when I go to work tonight (22 Kms away), and keep reading out my odometer reading over the air.

I'm suss though, I have tried drowning ppl out during their conversation just to test.. it seems I need to Rxz at 8 or 9 signal strength b4 they can hear me.

art, you said your dad could still hear you fine, but you could barely here him on the hand held. i would think that maybe the radio is putting out fine. did you you take a power reading off of a meter? i would also look at your antenna on your mobile, i am also not familiar with your antenna. 73

Yes, the handheld is a cheap and nasty 0.5Watt so I didn't even
expect it to reach 2 Kms based on past experience with 2 of the
handhelds. I guess my output power is at least greater than 0.5 Watts
from the mobile.

I have elevated feed antenna mounted on the bonnet with the
radio antenna (about 25 cm away from it.
There are two interchangeable antennas to screw in to the
elevated feed base, one is for flat land, and the other 3dB for hilly terrain.

I wish there were an RF power meter that you could buy.
