I like the President 2510,2600,Lincoln. I also like the Uniden Grant LT or older Cobra 148GTL if you can find them. In my mind the question is whether or not you will use SSB. If you're willing to spend $1000 on a base, I'd buy a good ham rig like a Icom 706. That radio is about $700.

What do people recommend for a mobile/base radio... i do not have a special licence for ham or cw or fm....

can someone help me.?

Another reason why Moleculo knows his schznit. Id go with an HR2510, or Lincoln, I wouldnt mess with the HR2600 (cause of the readout on the frequency mod). If your gonna get an HF rig I go with Kenwood or Yaesu. I dont like the Icom sound on SSB. You can find converted Kenwood 430s 440s or Yaesu 757s for under $400. Put an AM filter in it itll even do a good job on AM. Invest in a good microphone. Look for a Heil or a MC-60 to go with your rig.

That's wierd how the first two posts got re-arranged??  One more thing for me to fix....

hey there...

are you looking simply for the best 11 meter radio..
you mentioned not having a ham licence..
and or are you considering whatever radio works best..

if you want the best..
forget the 2510
forget the 2950 or 2970

kenwood is ok
yaesu does't impress me in the slightest..

in regards though to thedirtmover my
Icom 706MKIIG with Icom desk top SM-20 Power mike
combined with Jay's Interceptor I-10K kills yaesu & kenwood on in all modes including SSB (the 2950,2970 and 2510 included)

if you are looking for strictly a 11 meter radio and you have no desire or thoughts to get a ham radio licence..
then for mobil i would say likly the Cobra 148
if for base then Cobra 142 or 2000

Hope that helps

OK guys .....your talking real radios when your talking Kenwood and Icoms ......way out of this cb'ers league !! ....Hey Butch ? ......Do not under estamate the 2510 !! .......I've heard a few of them on AM that would knock you out of your seat !!! I guess I've just never been much on the 2950s .....had one once and didn't have it long .....if it's 11 meters ? .....up to this point ,as an operator, it's all about old school radios for me !! Not much even into SSB that much anymore ...bring on thes oldies but goodies. Uniden , Cobras , Teaberry's , the list goes on. Be me the CB junkie . Now maybe after 20 years of do'in my thing and I went out and got a ticket ? well then I might just find out what a truly good radio was all about. (-: after I saved my pop bottles and aluminum cans for a few years.
