Wilson 1000 swr

Ok this is weird I just checked my swr on my Wilson 1000 roof mount and it is at 9.4!!!! What could have happened? Now it has been on my truck for at least 5 or 6 years roof mounted. Anyone know what this could be? Maybe coax is wore out?

Thanks Eddie reading was taken with my MFJ Analyzer think i should change coax??

I'd guess water in the coil. I've seen a few taken apart that were all rusted and corroded in the coil area.

It did the same thing when i put my z180 on the mount..

I decided to do a video on this Wilson 1000 issue. It may not be technically correct, but I think it does diagnose correctly what the problem may be for Undertaker's antenna showing a very bad SWR that looks almost like a direct short.

Marconi I watched your vid just for the knowledge and must say thanks for taking the time to do this for those of us that need help or knowledge. Very informative. I was wondering could that bad antenna be fixed by replacing that bad componet?

I didn't take that matching device apart, so I can't tell you what problems are involved and whether it can be successfully put back together, but if the cap is the problem, then sure it can be fixed. The antenna would still work being exposed, but it obviously wouldn't support the antenna on a mobile.

Disconnect the coax at the antenna and substitute a known-good dummy load. This will tell you immediately if the problem is the antenna or the coax.

Well Bobby, that is good news. Something is shorted for sure. You could short the coax at the feed point end also and then check with a VOM and it should show continuity at the radio end as well, but be careful in case you have a very tentative connection in the coax that shows good, but RF goes crazy still. I would just put another coax in line and be careful that you don't change the old line physically. Then check it out and physically look for issues that should not be there. You might like to know what happened to that line if you find it damaged somehow.
