My UVD1P only does the crazy name/number/freq change after switching from memory mode to VFO mode(I don't remember what the manual calls it? work mode?). I jjust checked it tonight and I can turn it off all I want after having the memory set to channel name but after switching to VFO by pushing MENU then TDR and going back to memory by pressing MENU then TDR I get stuck with channel number instead of name. Its still a very good HT for the money
