Great price on a Cobra 29

Pilot and J have them on for $89.99 if you use your Frequent Fueler card and you can send away for a $20 refund. $69.99 for a brand new Cobra 29 is a darn good deal if you ask me.

    New mount changes SWR.

Replaced aluminum bracket and chrome stud of unknown material along with "metal strapping" - bonding strap, on a stainless mirror bracket, with: Stainless bracket and stud along with braided bonding strap. This resulted in higher SWR of .6 right across the channels: Ch. 1: 1.1:1 to 1.7:1 Ch...

    Frequency question

A few weeks ago, I made my first DX contact in years since, just recently becoming interested in this hobby again. I was driving north through Saskatchewan and spoke with Dallas TX and Niagara Falls. We spoke briefly on 38LSB but it was really crowded so the guy asked me to got to 27.390 (?)...

    Creating a RF choke...on purpose?

I have a Texas Star 350HD installed in a Freightliner truck. It works really well when the engine is off. When I key the mic with the engine running, the dashboard gages cycle, the warning lights and buzzers come on as if I've just turned the ignition off and on again. The advice I've...

    Is this possible?

I was cruising along US 12 in SD today when a call came through. Breaker 19 Go ahead break This is "sky truck" - we're a USAF C-130 heading to Portland from Delaware. Flying hurricane relief. Cruising at 22,000 feet. Any thoughts?

    SWR and bonding...

On a Freightliner with a single mirror mounted antenna, I ran a braided piece from the door hinge bolt to the firewall bolt. With or without, either way it is: Ch. 1- 1.4:1 Ch. 40-1.7:1 My question is: does the bonding still help antenna performance or not?

    May cause damage?

I operated my freshly tuned and checked vintage 148 with "pegging the needle SWR" for a relatively short amount of time. Keyed up maybe 20 times and didn't talk very long at any point before I realized there was a problem. Everything I've read states that damage "may" occur if this happens...

    What is "swing"?

And why should I care? What can I do to get it? Sorry, it's just more questions from a noob. Also, does Tx= transmit? Rx= receive? Thanks.

    Wilson 5000 vs Fiberglas 5/8 1000 & 102" Q's.

A shop told me that a W5000 would transmit/ receive way better/further than my current single Fiberglass 1000, on my big truck mounted as high as it can be (13' 6") If all else is equal, is this true? Is so, why? Is a W5000 as good as a 102" whip? Also, remember when people installed 102"...

    Little Wil on an Econoline?

Thinking of pulling the 148 out of the big truck and taking it along in the Econoline & Travel Trailer for vacation this summer. Would a Little Wil be an adequate antenna for this warmed up radio? The motivation towards the LW is that I can buy one with loyalty points from various truck stops...

    Would this work?

Thinking of mounting a single antenna to the stainless bracket in the picture. The roof cap is fiberglass, the rotating beacon would come of, I would run a ground wire. Trailer is always a flat deck and load height rarely exceeds roof height. Thanks, FLB

    More newbie questions:

A little background for the sake of context: I bought this 148GTL in 1991, it was modified for extra channels and tuned. I barely used it and the Texas Star 350 for about a year and then favored my 29 because it fit better in the new truck. The 29 got sold with the truck, enter the 148. Ss...

    Road Pro SWR Meter?

Good, bad, waste of money? Opinions, anyone?

    Road Pro SWR meter?

Im on the road and don't have easy access to purchase a meter. Truck stops however, gave an abundance of these meters. So my question is: are they reliable, accurate, how about the power meter function? Should I just wait till I get home and order one? If so, what brand?

    Recommend a shop?

I have in the past exclusively gone to Canyon Radio on Canyonville OR, but he appears to no longer be around. I'm kind of at a loss as to where to go now. I spend a lot of time on I-90,Seattle to Billings and I-95, Billings to Gary IN. Also the entire length of I-5. Any recommendations on those...

    SWR

I just installed a new 5' Wilson FGT using a new Wilson coax, in a truckstop parking lot. I didn't have much choice in what I bought and the SWR of 3:1+ mandated that I fix something right away. Since everything was factory original and had 7 years and a million miles on it, it was probably time...
