I heard a couple feet to even get in the ballpark,this sounds like way too much cutting or a poor design.The wilsons i have had tuned in seconds to a perfect match and i could talk all over the US.

i pulled up to a truck stop pulled out a 10k took his sparrow antenna off took hte 10k out the package
mounted the 10 on the left side dropped stinger down checked swr
pulled stinger up checked swr
pulled it out cut 3 inches off
rechecked pulled out stinger cut another 3inches
rechecked swr cut 2 inches
then cut 2 moe inches off
rechecked swr at 1.2 swr
pulled stinger out cut off 3/8 inch rechecked swr at 1.1

less than 15 minutes
might not be antenna design might be some real shotty mount setup

I have been told that my shaft is of adequate length and I'm not cutting any of it off.

I cut mine twice and it's still too damn short
