I'm looking for a good dual band 2m/440 vertical right around the $100 price range. After doing a bit of browsing I'm thinking about getting the Comet GP-3. Has anyone used this antenna? Comments? Any other antennas that would be a better choice? Thanks

Good 2m/440 Vertical?

I own a Diamond X510 and if it is within your budget to get the 17' version of the Diamond or the Comet sister model...just do it. They perform _great_ and you won't be sorry for spending on either one.
Height is everything with VHF and even more so with UHF so get it up there nice and high no matter what you get.

The Diamond X710 is likely the very best out there...at about $370
(is what i will use when i finally have to replace my Comet GP-9 )
i am not a big far of the GP-3
I have 2 friends who have it and is a ok antenna
but is nothing great
would be a lot better if you can Get the GP-9 (been a few yrs since i got mine but think it cost me $170) but is far superior to the GP-3 (far larger though also)
I can say on a 4/10ths of a watt i easily hit a repeater 60 miles away
My GP-9 is 52 ft at the base and the repeater i think is at 800 ft at its base
Oh and i am surrounded by RF from all over the NYC metro area

i have a few friends that tried the workman uvs-300 which is pretty much the same as the comet/ diamond. they are all made in taiwan. there is a tram, and a opek version too. i know for sure the workman, tram ,and opek are the same thing. i think opek makes them for all, but use other names. they use the uvs-300 and 1481 as model numbers. they are a little over 17 feet in length and are pretty much identical to the diamond and comet except half the price. my opinion is that the gain is inflated 2m 8.3 and 440 11.7 they are about 125 shipped i think. here are some specs on them. I would 2nd that opinion since i own one. i also owned a diamond 510 which eventualy started leaking at the joints after 4 yrs. I now have a GP-15 but thats becuase i wanted 6mtrs. too, it's still waiting to go up though. I can get into repeaters within 125 miles on a daily basis with 30watts. it's on a 30ft. tower tip is 57' off the ground
I'll add my vote for the Workman UVS-300. I've had mine up for right around 5 years now, and I love it. Can't beat it for the money!
I would get a Jetstream JTB 1. R&L Electronics sell them. Good reviews. Good priced too

pretty much the same antenna as the workman, opek, tram uvs-300. these are mass produced and marketed under several names. just seal them good at the joints with good silicone or coax putty so no water can get in. they should last years unless a mean storm comes thru. the main thing is the price. they are pretty much the same as the diamond, comet versions but half the price. i have bought another for a spare since my first post
