I have an old Kenwood that I would like to set up for APRS and need a way to key the radio.

It has two plugs, one for MIC and one for SP.

Somehow the headset would key the PTT. I vaguely recall seeing it ground the mic center to ground through a 2k resistor. Is this how it works?

I tried shorting the MIC plug, but that did not work, and of course that makes no sense because you would also short your audio! It seems you'd have similar problems if you shorted through a 2k resistor.

So how's it done?

OK, I figured it out, short mic ground to sp ground! At least that made it key.

It's a TH21bt.

That's what I was going to suggest but I wondered just how old the radio was. Kenwood has a differant way of doing things from everyone else. It makes getting external mic and headsets a bitch unless you are handy at rewiring things. Glad it worked for you.

Hello gentlemen and Ladies. I have the dreaded RCI-2990 receive issue where my radio gets distorted when people get close to my location. I found the C90 Capacitor, but I can not for the life of me find the C89 capacitor. Can or does anyone have a picture of the exact location of C89 ? Thank you in advance, Wes
