I mess with the local EOC doing weather reporting etc. Several of the 'spotters' have put some type of flashing lights on their vehicles, and they do work fine. One or two of them paid "HOW MUCH?!" for those flashing lights. Some are removable, some just hidden real good. I've thought about it several times but it always comes back to that "HOW MUCH?!" thingy. I got this thing about being cheap, you know?
Had to go by Auto Zone for something and just happened to walk down the lighting isle. (Flashing lights sort of fascinate me.) Saw this little LED "Quadra Strobe" by Pilot. Four LEDs, bright ones, variable flash rate and 'style'. I thought to myself, you know, that'd work real well with the LED light bar (brake/turn signals/BU light) on my truck. Wouldn't be that great for an emergency light thingy, but it @#$ sure didn't cost a 1/10th of the average going price either! Couple'a few more LEDs added to the four there and it would at least be noticeable. They're all white LEDs by the way. Who cares, I can tint them any color I want.
Mounted two to the rear on the top of a headache rack. Haven't figured out where to put the front ones yet. Unless they are 'on', you can't see them. Also figured that if I connected the rear ones through a DPDT switch, I could turn them into turn signals to the rear.
Not bad for $20 after taxes, huh? I'm so proud of my cheap self.

This thing will be a warning flashing light, NOT an emergency light by any means. If you need something like that, then do it right, not like this.

In Michigan those pretty lights or illegal on privatly owned vehicals, unless there is a snowplow on it, or volunteer fire. Also if those flashy lights should distract a driver, and he has an accident, guess who gets sued.

Rich,
You can certainly be right about your state, I wouldn't know. In Oklahoma you have to show a legitimate reason and be able to document it. That EOC, Emergency Operations Center, what used to be known as 'Civil Defense', does legitimately have a reason for using such lights. They are not the typical red/blue of emergency vehicles, but amber for the volunteer spotters. The EOC manager and his deputy do the red/blue thingy, not us.
In this state, it isn't the lights that designate an emergency vehicle, but the siren, weird, huh? Oh well. And if anyone thinks that any flashing lights are going to prevent accidents, oh are they gonna be surprised.

(I had to deal with those red/blue flashing lights for over twenty years at work. I have NO desire to have to deal with them now.)

"Hamsexy.com"... there really is such a thing! I thought it was a joke. And then after seeing the opening shots, I think I may still be right about the joke part. I feel so deprived!

The scariest posts there have been removed because the morons who published them have sued to have them taken down.

There are whackers that do videos with full soundtrack edits etc of them pulling over cars. Wearing fake raid jackets with ridiculous things like CAP and Red Cross on the back of them. Wearing holsters with flashlights that they hover their hands over as if they are carrying weapons.

I always hope they get shot by someone or run over....it's unfortunate but for whatever reason they aren't jailed.

If someone pulled a fake motorvehicle stop on my family in the car, the video would look a whole lot different. They'll find the wrong car one of these days.

I'm with you on that. If someone ever pulls that crap with me it's all over for them. Eleven years ago this month I had an idiot pull a "ham operator badge", you have probably seen them, and brag that it was all he needed to get thru security and into the scene since he was there officially providing emergency communications. Sorry......the scene I am refering too is the Swiss Air flight 111 crash up here in Sept. of 1998. Upon looking at his badge I asked him "Ever see one that looked like this?" and pulled my ID out while explaining that I was also a ham and understood EXACTLY what type of authority his badge meant. At the time I was an RCMP auxilliary officer and was in plain clothes while searching the beaches for the remains of the aircraft and passengers.I then escorted him back to the EOC and requested that he never be allowed back inside the perimeter again regardless of who sent him.Technically he broke no laws as he was just bragging about some non existant authority he thought he had but man talk about having the wind taken out of his sails. Given what we had to endure during those days that followed that event, and still do today, I still find it hard to believe I didn't kill him right then and there.
