ok guys just picked up a very clean dak. i would like to get a little better performance. any suggestions. it has very little forward modulation and may not have all the output it needs.

I'm only being a little sarcastic, the radio is not a great performer, Basic alignment and tune, wouldn't bother with the power mods etc, the gains really aren't worthwhile..

Here is some shots of my Dak X project....

Top shot is when I got it, Bottom is after I've readied the chassis for the transplant

The Daks are amongst the most impressive looking radio around, its unfortunate they didn't stick the same time, and thought into the function...

MisterFatty, are you making a plate modulated 148GTL? LOL!

941Texas, the DAK radios had the PLL02A chip in them, and PLL02A chassis are not known for their strong modulation or power output.

all the thought and design of those chassis went into the channel capability.
if you want extra channels, the PLL02A is a great chip, its just that the radios that have it dont tend to shine in any of the other areas.

i have to agree that they make a great box for a real radio to be put in.

this is what i was concerned with. its pretty lame now. and hard to even get forward swing of any kind. and yes no audio. i like the rx on it and the meters are handy. just not talking very well.

i found some old secret CB mods for this chassis.

just be forewarned; secret cb was known to have made some mistakes so all steps should be checked against a schematic to make sure the mod makes sense.

cbtricks has done a great job of cross referencing the corrections, but i would still proceed carefully.

good luck,

well i tried the 2nd secret cb mod but could not complete it. it shows point to attach the switch to are labeled a, b and c. never could find c. never the less the extra output is not that big of a deal. proper tuning is becoming a issue. i am still getting backward swing. i know there are better radios out there but i am commited now. :headbang

In all honesty, I would dump that sucker while its still working, there are a few that still think they aren't bad, and Feebay seems to pull a good buck for them.

It has been a long time since I played with a Dak IX, but from what I recall it uses an entirely different modulation scheme from "normal" CB radios, and you just aren't going to get it to do a whole hell of a lot. I do remember the one I had, I used the old"dial-a-watt" method to drop the carrier, changed a couple caps in the final section, and managed a reasonable forward swing, but even still the radio was a dog, Sold it, and bought a Pres washington, and 138XLR, and still had some change leftover.

You gutted it?
Interesting project.
Would make a fine subject for another thread.
What are you going to put in the case in place of the original board?
Cobra 142GTL or ???

Not sure yet on the donor radio, I do have a couple of candidates though. If I manage to do it without tossing the Dak remnants in the trash can I'll post up on it

Oh I have some quite grand ideas, I'm not certain if they'll ever be more then ideas though....

Been spending alot of time with PIC micros lately, and may apply a few ideas from that, Have a pretty cool Multi-tone rogo-beep that should thrill many a truck driver to no end :D

I was really looking forward to using the Dak's real Estate, but once you get down to it, there isn't as much as you might think..... Still trying to decide if it is worth a small tOOb amp, or maybe a little white transistor or two...

Also still wanting to build a Russian based amp, probably a few GI7s so who knows... I'm notorious for having way to many unfinished projects

DAK AUDIO

I have a local friend here with a DAK MK X with an ASTATIC D-104 & that thing will make your speaker rattle. It is MEAN "LOUD" with some SERIOUS PUNCH YOU IN THE MOUTH AUDIO! Sounds SWEET to me!

does anybody have a shot of the tube board, bottom side of a DAK9? (where the 2 HV caps that mount to the board are)
i replaced the HV caps on the radio and now when i flip it to TX i have a bad buzz and one of the cans heat up pretty fast, but i thought i hooked everything up as it was.
nothing burnt no sparks, i turned it off asap. but i did nothing but swap out the 3 47uf 450v caps.

Sounds like you have one of the caps installed backwards.
My two units don't have two on the circuit board.

I have one Mark 9 with two of the 47uf caps mounted on the chassis and one on the Circuit board and another unit with the three caps mounted on the circuit board.
Which board do you have?
