I've been lurking here for a while and even registered a few months ago but this is my first post....I know this may come as a shock to many of you but I have a couple questions, First, I've been listening to my 520s quite a bit after getting it two weeks ago (taking my exam on the 19th) and a lot of station reports I hear say 5 by 9 or other #s by #s, I understand the s meter scale but this confuses me a bit, what does it mean? Second, where the heck is 75m? I've printed the freq allocation from ARRL and it's not listed??? Also, who gets to use it?
Thanks

the 5 by 9 is more or less a readibality report....If I remember right it is how CW operators let each other know how they sounding to each other

75 meters is I think the upper end of the 80 meter band....

I could be wrong with this ....I am usually wrong more than I am right

and welcome to the forum !!

" You are 5 9 +10 into Mi, Ol' man" The 5 is a 5 inreadability on a scale 0f 0-5. the 9 is a signal strength of s9, on a scale of 0-9. the +10 means he is 10db over s9 on the receivers S meter. In CW there is a 3rd number of 0-9 for tone quality of signal.

75 Meters

As mentioned above, 75 is located on the upper end of what is typically refered to as 80 meters. 75 is defined as 3750 - 4000 kHz. General, advanced, and extra class licenses have access to some or all of the 75 meter band, depending on license class.

Everyone is 5 & 9 in a contest.

It's very hard work telling the world that they are 5 & 9. Can take a whole weekend.
