I have been bitten by the upgrade bug again and am trying to make a logical decision.

I am currently running an unmolested cobra 2000 bare foot that has good audio just not monster audio. I kind of want to leave it alone and setup another rig to run as my primary base radio.

I already have a TNT 350hd that I rarely use in my 4x4 so I think I will buy a power supply to use it for my base amp.

What base station would be a good match for the TNT 350, I kind of like the RCI2980WX?

Any suggestions will be appreciated!

Thanks
Mike.

Why dont you just find a used or new hf radio and convert it to 11 mtrs...if you dont have you hf lic.Find a good kenwood 820 140 430 440 450 ts50...or a yeasue radio...just saying...73s good luck de JW

You will not find a better base than the one you have now. I have had them all from Trams to Browning's,RCI's,Galaxy and many more. The Cobra 2000 is one of the very best radios you could ever hope to own. If you want monster audio and yet still be clean then find a nice Elkin Tube amp. They built them in 2,4,6,8,and 12 tubes with power numbers from 200 to 800 watts. These things are known for there loud audio and will give you what you want. If you cant find an Elkin then just about any other well built tube amp will work and give you that monster audio your after.

You really dont want a base station that has been modified to be loud an over modulated because you will either be so distorted to others that you will sound like trash and or you wont be able to talk on it until after your neighbors go to bed because you will be bleeding all over their TV and phones!

Been there, done that and moved on!

Like he said, its a good setup. But i would get a yeasue ft 450 or icom 718,if it was me,they run am/ssb great and dont bother tvs or other electrinic equipment...73s de JW

Have you seen what 718's are going for now? When they came out they were around $450 to $500 now there over $650! $650 would buy a really nice used Icom 706.

If it were me...and i have had two nearly new ones...i would try and find a Yaesu FT101 EE. There is a huge following for these radios and parts can be found,as well as people who can work on them. That was the best sounding radio i ever owned, even had a better sound to it than my D201A and 101's are not that expensive! But for someone who is not that familiar with a radio like that they can be little hard to use.

You wont have that big booming loud audio with one but the sound quality is out standing!

This is just an observation based prediction with no hard evidence.

BUT, if you are going to get one, I think now would be the time. I'm starting to see alot more components for sale, telling me that more of these rigs are being parted out then ever before. The more of them being parted out, the more a working rig might be worth in the near future. But that's just a guess.

You are never going to get better audio out of an export than a Cobra 2000......not even close. I have been running a peaked/NPC modded and volted Cobra 2000 on the base for 10 years and it has monster audio using a stock cobra hand mike. Every RCI I have ever heard doesn't have monster audio but they are ideal SSB radios.
Tune the 2000 and use it.

i agree ive had galaxys, rci, magnum none of them have the audio
of a cobra 2000,142, or uniden washington. id use what ya got
your amp is a good match for the radio.if you decide to expand
your possibilities checkout the 2950dx same as the 2980wx
but much better on ssb
