Fixing the Galaxy D88

So it begins, I am now on the road to putting the galaxy back together enough to try it out. I was out puttering in the workshop this morning listening to the early bird old folks that get on channel 2 first thing in the morning, nice group of guys, bunch of locals, one lives about 7 blocks from me. Anyhow, I was looking at the old cobra that's half disassembled on my bench and figured the case would make a great bracket, so I peeled the case off

and took it over to my rusty trusty anvil and flattened it out, and laid out the shape of the braket I will need to support the Frequency counter.

then I cut out the shape with some snips and had to re-flatten it, I love my anvil.

I bent the tabs down for the sides and center brace and dry fit it.

a couple drill holes and a snip of some slots and its all screwed into place.

I hope repairing the rest of it is this simple.

Nothing beats a "FBH" for that delicate radio repair.

You first need a horse then you stand him on the anvil and start pounding on his feet

Last time you had a thread about this radio, you talked about fixing it.

well What you see here is what I have done rob. I am ready to vacuum it out and plug it in. I'm going to try it out and see if it works in the next couple days. and if not.... I'll have to figure that out then I guess.

i dont see the need . .you cannot use a cover with a speaker in it any longer either .
why did you feel the need to move the frequency board from its stock location?
the whole thing just confuses me .

you also might want to think about finding a cleaner place to do your radio work.
its a bit dusty in there! LOL

that is its stock location, some one else removed a brace or something before I got the unit. and also removed the covers. I could have left it laying all loose on the main board i guess, but that probably would have caused a short when I plugged it in. Since I have to fabricate the covers myself I am sure I can figure out a way to leave space for an internal speaker.....

unfortunately, my shop is the only place that is cat/animal free. you may wonder why this matters, we do a lot of fostering and rescue work so our cat population fluctuates from 15 to 25 at any given moment. I don't know if you have ever tried to work on something with 3 different cats vying for your attention, but its really frustrating. at this point it's a toss up which is worst cat dander/hair or saw dust. I won't bother listing the rest of our animals but we have quite a few.

during the winter my workshop winds up a lot cleaner because I am trapped in there for projects. ah well it is what it is.

the stock location for that board is bolted to the side of the chassis right by the channel selector board. it was very near it stock location in the first picture before you moved it .
hold it up to the chassis on that side and you will see it lines right up with a factory hole for the screw.

well, fancy that. I just went by where the wires wanted to make it lay and figured that was where it should go.....

So I just wandered out to the garage and indeed found the hole of which you speak. I have no intention of using an internal speaker on this since its going to be a base unit I'm just going to leave it as is.
