The most creditable sources say:

David Hannum Is actually the one that made the statement, after he and 4 other business men bought 2/3`s interest in the " Cardiff Giant " Statue from Mr. George Hull for $30.000.
Barnum went on to have another one made, and claimed that the one Mr. George Hull sold to Hannum and his associate's was a fake.
In reality both of them were fakes, but as the saying goes......
