Hi All

I found my old, but, new (if you know what i mean?) President Lincoln and President George Radio's the other day....

I fancy getting back into DX on 11 metres, I think i have everything i need, but which of the two radio's would you use most?

Thanks for your help in advance.

Mike.

As you have both, I would run each for a couple weeks and see how they do.
The George has more features than the Lincoln, 18 memory channels that remember what mode they are set on when you program them, dual color display.
I do not care for the built in echo, they can be set for several channels schemes ...I think to get the UK FM frequencies spot on, you need to unlock the RIT.
The security code thing could be a pain if you did not know the default, i think you have to apply power the radio, press "program" 4 times and then power the radio on.....do not know if they did away with that on the later models.
The Lincoln is more compact, the George is more the size of the "DX" style radios.
They both were expensive rigs at the time ( over here anyway)
I would treat both with care as it is hard to find parts for them, the Lincoln will have a Mrf 477, Mrf 497 or a Mrf 455 depending on when it was made, and now the transistors are no longer made.
The George has dual 2sc1969`s in it, also no longer made.
If the LCD displays start to "seep" there are no replacements now days.
All of this may sound frighting but it is just age, if they have been stored away in a temp controlled environment it helps.
I have run the Lincoln/2510/2600 all good radios, but they are getting old and are starting to show there age, caps get dry, the glue used to hold components down on the CPU board and a few other places gets dry, old and can eat away at traces on the board.
If you have the latest one that was made with the 455 final, you are that much ahead of the game as far as age.
If you really like the radios, it might be good to think about having a good radio guy go through them and replace the electrolytic caps with new, and clean the old glue off the boards at some point to keep them living.
They are good radios, just that 1988 when they came out with that design was a few days ago.
For More info on the George Maybe Jazzsinger, or Bob85 might have something to say as I am sure they have seen more of that model.

Above all, welcome back to the Hobby and have fun.

Pretty Sure!

Hi guys

Thanks for your replies, i guess it does make sense to power both up and see which is the best fit for my purposes.

They are both box fresh - i have used them - but only once or twice - always in my shack (as was back then), as they were bought on a whim i boxed them both back up and there they sat til the other day.....

Believe it or not - my chosen radio for DX back in the day was a President Madison - IN THE CAR!
Yes i did use the extension speaker and had a Silver Eagle too (still got that kicking around here too some where!) Good job i had a roomy car!

The way to go was with a 9ft Stainless Whip, no linear and head for the hills.

This was the only way to go, as when my wife came home from work and saw the Antron 99 on the chimney - she freaked out and the whole caper went down like a french kiss at a family reunion.

Not sure which years these two radios were bought - but back then the only Ranger i had heard of, was there to stop you stealing picanic baskets..........

Mr Sky - I will update you on what is what with the radio's - many thank's for your interest.

Thanks for your help guys.

Will update.

Mike

If you meant the George Washington; that is not a bad radio either. By any means. It is the same as the Uniden Grant. It must be converted over to get more frequencies/'free band'. Same is true with the Lincoln IIRC, before it can operate on 11m. . .

Get them Both working.
Use the Washington for a base and the Lincoln for the mobile!

George Mobile

Hi,

No it wasn't the Washington Base, it was the "George" Mobile.

They are thin on the ground over here, but there are a few out there, seems like the UK may be more familliar with the George - but don't know for sure.

Neither are still in production it seems?

If i knew how to post a link or a pic i would - so you could see it.

Cheers.

Hi. Upload your pictures via: photobucket.com than post the link here on the thread to each photo.

Now if your using a telephone 'droid or iphone' with tapatalk you'll see a chain button next to submit and discard click that and go to gallary on the phone. Easy.

Here you go.
Yes, as far as I know both radios are out of production.
President Electronics* built many good radios, the problem is that they thought so too, and over time they started pricing them like they were coated in 24K.

The Real deal, is that almost all of the ones I have ever seen, had UNIDEN silk-screened on the board somewhere.
Granted I have not seen many of the UK/Euro models.
Now try to get Uniden Corp Of America to tell you anything about that story, and you will get blank /blinking /eyes like a dear caught in the headlights.
