Been reading a lot of reviews for the past 2 months about the 2970n2. What is the true ssb output power after a good tune up?
A local picked one up new from sparkyscbshack and it does 350w ssb & 200w± AM. I don't do any other modes except ssb & cw. I read on cbradiomagazines.com and his review says 200w.....
Just want an honest answer on true pep output.

29702n

Mine did till I sent it to Radio supply for proper alignment. My Astron 50 amp power supply wasn't enough to supply it.

What was the output ? That's crazy a astron50 couldn't power the rig !

There are some old threads on the 2970N2 here. When they first came out there was some issue with the way they were either tuned or set from the factory. This caused them to draw a bunch of amperage.

I think DXman had one and he sent it to DTB to be re-done. After he got it back it would run fine on a 36 amp power supply. I think they are pretty much a 200-250 watt max radio, which is decent for sure.

Here is the old thread.

They can do more than 200 and as mentioned some early models from the factory were set up incorrectly and were pulling a ton of amps and doing a ton of output but they didn't last long.

I'd keep it closer to the 200 range for longevity purposes.

Thanks cbrm. When I pick up a 2970n2 I'll make sure my output is 200 Watts ± SSB. I really have no desire to use chicken band so maybe I can sell the echip supplied with the radio ?

There is a tech in Hollywood, AL that swears his 2970N2 is doing 400 watts. I know now why nobody is ever in the store having anything done.

if you got one to do 400w it wouldn't last long the RCI-69FFB4 after a tune will do 425w again at bellscb and the guy even puts up a vid on youtube of the radio after he tunes it to show you what it does on a scope and a bird here is another copy past of this radio Transmitter

RF Power Output

AM-FM: 200W RMS
AM: 350W PEAK
SSB PEP: 300W
After Tune-Up:
AM-FM: 100W RMS
AM: 425W PEAK
SSB PEP: 400W

I think that is still pushing it. Just a simple alignment within factory specs is all that is needed. 50 amp draw is just to much.

no different than if you had an amp that wasn't built into the radio and you can put a switch into the 2970n2 to shut the amp off so your not running it hard all the time

Keep it no more than 225 watts on ssb!!

I have one of the 1st series N2's and it was doing 300 watts, but after listening to what needed to be done with the radio, I sent it in to DTB radio and had a really good detune done on it.

Dave dropped the output down to 225 on ssb (am is still 275 - but no use that mode much anyway) and it is running just fine on a 35 amp PS. It draws 21 amps now on ssb.

The radio should last me the rest of my life! For it only gets hooked up for about 20 hrs a year - it's just more power than I need to talk around the world on 11 meters...(y)(y)
