How is the SWR on a Hy-gain SPT 500 reached. Is it a difficult antenna to tune. Does it need to be mounted above 20 feet to function properly. Would it be a good antenna to purchase?? Thanks folks.

Thanks RADIOOMAN, I took a look at the CB tricks site and saw the instructions for assembling the antenna, but no instructions on how to tune it. I'll look around the for other threads on this antenna and maybe I'll find out that way. Thanks again for your help.

Put your antenna on a test pole so you can get it on and off easily. Slide the top section up or down in small increments to get it tuned to the desired frequency.
have fun.

Ok I read a thread by Eastman at the bottom of the page on this thread. He said that he ajusted his antenna to 22 feet and he got swr's that he was happy with. He has his approx 40 feet on a mast so thats both my questions answered. I just have to find out how much money it will cost me to import one into this country. I'll check that out later on. Again Thanks for your help Radiooman.

try adjusting the length of the vertical . start at 22 ft 6 inches . if that isn't close enough make it a 1/2 inch to a inch shorter or longer and follow the direction that gets you going in the right direction vswr wise .

what is your vswr currently ?

He doesn't have one yet.
He is in pursuit of one.
He's in Ireland and has to find out what is involved in getting one shipped to him.
He just wanted to get some information about it afore hand so that he can factor that into the whole picture and help him with his decision about getting one shipped.

IROCK817 your right as regards the way to tune it. It seems to be what Eastman did and thats the way I'll go if I do buy a 500 spt. Thanks for your input too.

A friend got a Sirio Tornado 27 and he is more than happy with it.
He has it 40 feet to the feed point and he is the strongest local signal for the same distance and same power.
And it appears that he is hearing better than most.

If it proves too expensive too get the SPT500 then I may go with a tornado or something similar. It would be nice to buy one off the classic antennas in the cb hobby. We'll see how it goes. Best 73's.........

I remember 2 different factory tuned lengths for the original P500, one back when there were only 23 channels and the newer 40 channel version;
22' 9.5" & 22' 6.5" respectively.
I think the antenna is longer than a normal 5/8 because the bottom of the radiator is part of the matching network according to Shockwave. With the top hat radials mine likes to tune at 268"(I had to check my notes) for channel 30, plus the bottom insulator and connector.

Thanks Needle Bender for that info. I haven't got the antenna yet but if I do manage to get one, I'll have been pointed in the right direction for getting the correct swr's and tuning wont be the problem that I thought it would be. Thanks for researching your notes for me.
