I need some help in understanding here. Why echo? What is the purpose of it? Even in my CB days I never liked it. The only time I liked it was my radio days when I was spinning disc's at a 10,000 watt oldies AM station in Joliet IL. It gave show the 50's feel, anyway I am not trying to start a flame war here but almost every DX radio has echo? I can understand the roger beep but not echo.

So I ask the question..... why?

It helps some guys sound like they have real balls when in fact they sound more like a mouse unless they use a touch of echo.

Other than that I have NO idea why. Some claim it makes them sound better and easier to understand......BS. Having worked in professional sound broadcasting for 22 years I have NEVER seen or heard a case where distorting the audio by adding echo has ever increased the intelligibility of a signal.

This is where the pro echo users jump all over me for making that statement.

Echo is an AM thang.

Always has crappy results when used on SSB; the slightest bit off freq ('likely') and they are nearly IMPOSSIBLE to understand or to respond to. Some guys just don't/can't get it.

If they can come up with hi-fi cb then I'd drop the echo all together. My echo sounds great on my CRE-8900 when used on am but kept to a minimum. However,my brother can't stand it when I have the echo cranked up especially when i talk on my 959 with the RF Limited 2018 mic. He asked why and I tell him I like echo. No echo or roger beep on sideband though. People will either remind you or no talk to you. In my opinion, echo adds to the audio chain especially if you have a low tone voice like I do and adds an edginess to your voice. An added plus is to crank the echo all the way up if some really obnoxious operator is hogging up the channel.

Most people run way way too much echo. On AM with just a slight touch of echo it can give you that stadium effect sound and actually sounds great. BUTTTTTT most people over do it and it sounds crappy. Truck drivers seem to love it, as long as they keep buying radio's with echo then it's here to stay.

It sounds crappy on AM as well. Mode makes no difference. FM is bad too. Never heard it on CW so I can't comment on that mode.

What if that really obnoxious operator is being obnoxious because he is running his echo cranked up all the way? IMO it becomes a case of dumb and dumber.
