Assuming the thickness is the same, a larger O/D is better because it's generally stronger. You'll want to go with a 1.25" O/D mast, though (per the manual):

1.25" Water Pipe has worked for me many years at 20' with it attached to the house at 18'. It has held a Shakespear Bigstick and currently holds a CLR-2.

I have a pressure treated 6x6x12 with the bottom on the ground, a 12 ft length of 1.25 galvanized chain link fence top rail lag screwed to the side 6x6 with three lag screws (overlap the 6x6 and galvanized about 14-16 inches, a lag screw 2 " from the end of the pipe and end of the 6x6 and the third in the middle) and the A99 attached to the top of the galvanized.

The bottom of the A99 is about 22-23 feet off the ground. Using a Cobra 148 GTL (barefoot) I am in the mountains of north Georgia and in the last week I have talked to New Jersey, New York, Michigan, Minnisota, Nebraska, Arizona, California, and Alabama. Locals say I sound good too.

Cheap, secure, and works well.
