"D Star"

Henry! Have you looked into DMR Radio System? I drove from Riverside to Cal State Santa Barbra
using DMR in a QSO with people from around the world. I was completely clear just like they were in
he car with me Hawaii, Australia, Chile, Porto Rico, Europe, Canada, and 4 people from the us.
I was using a $180.00 handheld CS 700 radio. All you need is a Tec License.. KJ6YGI

D-star is old technology and Icom only . DMR is the new space age stuff converted from
Motorola commercial ( Cal state police ) as well as most police agencys use it. Instead of 25mc it uses 12.5mc band with, that will give you TWO freq's on a pair instead of one. It is digital so no tweakers and unless they have a DMR they can not hear you. To them it
sounds like packet. Also the radio has a analog side for normal 440 uhf. Great Stuff.
Go to DMR map and see all the repeaters.. Good luck....

Which repeaters where you hitting during your trip?
The first one was Mt. Pleasant then it is internet based. Like echo link only without
the time delay and white noise. So from there on you are continually connected on that channel as you drive. There as of now 2000 channels to use, so once on you stay on until you clear. Research DMR on the web. If you want to see the repeater's go to
DMR repeaters on the web. From Mt. Pleasant to Ojai Ca.

I dont think digital is going to take off as much as we would like it to in any format. When it comes to vhf/uhf most hams are lazy and cheap, and a large portion cannot program new radios very well.

Sorry!! I have not responded sooner. I know of 4 new DMR repeaters going upas I respond and a 5th on Idlewild is in the works. The one in Wrightwood will cover the southern cal area plus the upper desert (making it perfect for Burning Ham. You would not have to set up a repeater at all as 4 watts will get you to Barstow, ot Wrightwood. Then you are connected to all the repeaters on the channel you chose. As far as cost DMR its the cheapest world wide system you could possibly have. A Tech license gives you more then a General ticket Think of the savings (antennas, amps radios, towers, ect) not needed. The radios are a wide range of costs. Baofeng the cheapest ($100, up to Motorola about $350, and a multiple of others in between. All the major radio manufacturers are getting on board (Yaesu, Icom, Kenwood, ect) all going with Moto-Turbo fermware. There is a rummer that is going to phase out "D" Star as they are about giving away there repeaters for "D" Star and going DMR. Repeaters sell for around $ 1800 giving you Two chanels on your pair you have now. DMR uses half the band with of VHF or UHF so one repeater you have both on one repeater you have now for UHF. You do not need telephone lines as a 40 GIG hot spot is all you need. Well I bent your ear enough sorry. See you on DMR sooner or later. Handle Grumpy (grandpabiker) Wayne KJ6YGI
