Hello guys im aligning a cobra 29ltd using the alignment procedure, now im using my laptop to send tone cannot hear it on the radio any help would be appreciated also i tested all my cables they work well. im assuming i might be missing something.

Kaos you can use the laptop with a proper tone downloaded to it just to help with TX align. you need to play with a old junk radio to see how all of this works and do a lot of reading. the service manual tells you what to do if you would read it and pay attention to what it is telling you to inject into a certain section.the main basic items you will need is a good commercial freq counter 8 diget at least., a 100mhz scope,a tone generator and a signal generator. this is the basic. forgot you need a good watt meter and swr mete and a good volt ohm meter, plus a good soldering gun.

Guess my laptop will not work to send tone.
I agree with Robb's suggestion, but for the sake of clarity; I believe you're trying to play the 1 kilohertz tone through your speakers without any physical connection to the radio, you'll have to place the (keyed) microphone close to it.

If you are trying to generate any other kind of signal using your computer, other peripherals/software will be involved, you can use the speaker method in a pinch to test TX modulation adjust, maybe a meter adjust, you could "tune" the TX output some and that's about it.
But for actual transceiver alignments you're going to need a real signal generator(AF & RF), 'scope, 8 digit frequency counter and more.. From reading your post it sounds like you're trying to do a receive alignment and you're not using the right tool or method.
You could make a small signal gen. out of an old Cobra 25 or something; if you need a link for that process then let me know.

EDIT: Just saw sonoma's post

Hello gentlemen and Ladies. I have the dreaded RCI-2990 receive issue where my radio gets distorted when people get close to my location. I found the C90 Capacitor, but I can not for the life of me find the C89 capacitor. Can or does anyone have a picture of the exact location of C89 ? Thank you in advance, Wes
