When is ssb mode the power meter swings to max 80W, but no matter how loud I talk on AM it rarely goets past 40W sometimes 50W but rarely. Swr, is all good. Powered directly to battery. Normal?

Also in real life terms, what are your thoughts on the 955hpc v ranger RCI 2970n2? With real life terms I'm referring to the lower wattage of the Stryker compared to the RCI. Cheers.

I used to talk to a guy on SSB that was about 27 miles away and he owned both radio's. The Stryker was hands down the better sounding radio. His 2970 was the older version with 2290 finals not the mosfet junk.

You really need no more then that radio.

I'd be happy with the 50 pep on AM. It will be cleaner and live longer. The service manual says 15 watt carrier max. 100% mod would be around 60 pep.

I found the waveform on mine looked better with a 10 watt carrier. Those poor little finals are just about out of poop when you fully modulate a 15 watt carrier.

15 watt AM carrier will tax them even with added fan cooling IMO. I definitely agree that the 10 watt AM carrier power level does sound the best with the lowest IMD. Just wish I'd get some longevity out of them :p

My stryker does 80 on am and 80 on ssb. and that is not at full power..

I had a stryker 955 that did the same.. 80+.. I no longer own it because I gave it to a friend months ago.. It was a great radio and has super loud audio.. I now run a SDR radio in the shack with a Electro voice RE27 microphone...

Indeed, mines just export modded, not tuned or and anything.

Where did you buy your radio? The reason I ask is many people price shop and buy radio's from Copper or H & Y. They then convert the radio themselves and they have a nice average sounding radio. You will only sound as good as the tech is that tuned your radio. If you buy a radio from a shop that does quality work your radio will get converted, tuned, aligned, and shipped once. By the time you get it it's plug and play.
