To those that have shipped their rigs in for tune up / repairs

Just wondering, apart from the note inside detailing what the issues are etc and good solid boxing and padding is there anything else one should look out for when posting a cb in for repairs or allignment? Would putting masking tape on it like those in the youtube videos be "gay"?

Have you tried this radio in your truck yet?

No.
Do you think it is the PSU? I would have thought, and I could be wrong, that if the PSU was working it would just work and not cause the amp to show lower wattage output.

I always make it a point to rule out everything possible.

If it isn't too much hassle to try it in your truck, I would do that anyway and note any difference before you send it out.

Mine seems fine. I did have to tame it down some out of the box.

Just get one unmolested and set it up yourself if it needs it.

I think the moral of the story I learned was this, one can do only so much without tools and expertize. I was lucky enough to have fourstringburn advice me on the hi and lo dk pots which I adjusted to ball park correct figure. In a group of guys, Im always the one that gets turded on, Ive learned to live with this curse.

You should be fine if you do two simple things. First, buy the radio from a shop that does quality tech work and can give it a correct conservative tune/alignment. Once you get it don't run it wide open all the time and don't open it up and dink around with stuff.

A local here has one and it sounds superb. He runs it off a 70 amp Astron. We talk SSB most of the time, he turns the power up to the point where the radio draws 25 amps and then he leaves it alone.

Might as well. He'll be able to see if the transmitter is relatively clean and hopefully clean up the signal for you.

A good tech will perform repairs then check for alignment for correct TX/RX frequency. I would ask to have the alignment anyway.

If that's a 70 amp PSU, it will maintain 52 amps all day..it should do RF amps up to 500 watts.

52 amps is typically what 70 amp PSU are rated at for average power. 70 amps is peak and where the PSU will likely trip.
