Avanti AV 150...astrobeam

They were the ugliest antennas ever made. My neighbors hated mine. One offered to take it down and paint it for me, I knew I would never see it again if he took it down.
The mast is part of the tuned antenna and I don't think it affects the radiation pattern.
The only problem I had with it was that when it rained the SWR went up.

That is an awesome story.

Back in the day a friend had at Astrobeam mounted about 30 foot up and as i recall it did very well on sideband. He could hear a lot of stations that I couldn't when we were talking locally (no skip).

I think they were just playing off the popularity of the Astro Plane omni. I had an Astro Plane omni antenna. Probably the best thing about it was it was easier to get it up higher
than the other popular ground plane antennas like the Super Mag and the HyGain CLR-2.

I drive by a business that still has an Astro Plane on the roof but it is all busted up and missing a lot of parts. Remnants of a bygone era!
will it get around the problem of the mast and feeder upsetting the pattern in a vertical beam ?
I don't see any way of getting around that with a vertical beam. Nonetheless they do work well. I had a 3 element vertical beam on CB for a short while. I doubt it affects the pattern all that much. Maybe acceptable losses so to speak. Only so much you can do about it. Maybe not as big a deal at HF than it is at VHF. The performance of a vertical beam on CB set up reasonably well should be a real eye opener compared to the usual omni.
