The furthest contact Ive ever made,,(no skip) is about 90 miles, ssb, imax2000 at 80 feet. The moon-raker does a little better on signal, but my buddy also has a moon-raker at 50 feet.

FURTHEST LOCAL NON-DX CONTACT?

Well a few months back, on a Saturday morning. Turned on the radio and spun the dial to 12. In a few moments I got a radio check call come. I said loud and clear buddy whats your 20. He was 2 miles away. WOO HOO. my best non DX contact. 
Gary , not trying to get the thread off track ( But I tend to do that ) is it just me ? Or did most of us grow up w/ a Ham Op next Door ? My first experience many years back was my neighbor , walking around w/ a portable & asked " What's your Phone # " he did something an my home phone rang & it certainly amused this 12 year old kid ! Hence I started on 11m & been there since , even though I get prodded now & again to get my " Ticket " . Stay Healthy & Safe ! 73 & God Bless ! Leo

All my local ticket holders spend more time on 11.meters then they do on the amateur bands. So I thought if the amateur bands are so good why are all those ticket holders spending most if not all of their time on 11? That's why I never bothered. Plus I'm lazy. Studying is not and has never been my forte.
It can if your at the right place at the right time. I worked western Colorado from mid Illinois. 996 air miles. 100 watts and a 13 el at 58 ft. I was calling east and he was s7 off the back! He heard me call. I aimed west he was +30. Good tropo duct...

He was in Tennessee and flat side on a four element beam. Distance was approx 110-120 miles. Several other guys local to me talked to him as well. I have his name and town logged in but don’t remember it without looking it up.
Like Leo, when I was a kid in the 1950’s my parents next door neighbor was a HAM Radio guy...Mr. Brown.
I was fascinated by the under dash radio in his two tone green Buick and the radio gear in his house. He had also Installed seat belts in that Buick.
All of that was interesting stuff to a curious kid. Still is.

A good percentage of the CB'ers here are inactive hams. Most of them never got their general or even put up a HF antenna. I talk on whatever band I can find good conversation. If you ever change your mind, go for the general license. Once you find a good group on HF you'll be hooked.

I remember that show but don’t remember their cars. When HP went off the air in 1959 I was 16...Yikes!

Not exactly, I know a few who are like me. Family,work, chores..no time for all those bands right now..it's a selfish hobby. Passed my general in '86.
Your right..80am is addiction. Radio is my drug of choice..That was fun when I was single...I'ld be unemployed and divorced if I every put up a 1/4 wave vertical and talked till the sun came up.
I'd be lucky to pass the novice test. There are people like myself at least I think so that are just not first and the theory of the type of electronics test they give for the general ticket. I truly believe that no matter how much I study I just won't be able to pass it. And in all honesty happy on 11 meters. Would I like to have a choice of operating on other bands? Yes! What I like it enough to keep going back? That I don't know. I would have to do it first, and that's just not likely.
My best non skippy would be around 35 miles. Some guy south near the coast. Kind of tough getting in cause of the “heavy hitters” with their 20k rigs. But when I do make it in it’s cool!!!
